The Tower of Improbability!
I could write about how I am all depressed and whiny and my brain keeps coming up with new reasons to hate myself and it's kind of getting to me, and I'm going to do NaNo anyway.
Or I could write about how I finally gave notice at Zoup! to work more hours at the bird store and how much of a weight this is off my shoulders and how I'm now wondering how I did it for that long at all.
Or I could write about love, and how much it is awesome and hurts and how I am struggling to keep from angsting constantly on this subject, with limited success.
Or I could say fie! fie! to journalling, and read more comments or archives of Slacktivist, or work on NaNoWriMo as I should be doing.
Instead, I will describe what is now my home in Minecraft. I have dubbed it the Tower of Improbability. It is a very shady spot in Hemn Space indeed.
The first tower* was a sandcastle, with an underground entrance that went to the Sea. Then I dug the Cave of Wonders, in a misguided attempt to create a thing of beauty, and stumbled into horrors and riches in equal proportion. When I had despaired of beauty, I cursed the laws of reality and probability, and surveyed my scattered disarray of forges and workbenches, my hoard of tools, my chests of metals, magma, stone and precious stone alike. And I laughed, and was taken by a momentary fit of madness.
Soon, the sandcastle that had been the marker of a den was no more, demolished by my flailing shovel, and I stood on the beach, nothing in between me and the skies-- nothing, that is, but the skies themselves. And I began to build. I built walls, with and without windows-- I smelted glass and bedrock alike, and I crafted doors on whims.
Now, stands the Tower of Improbability. At its base lies a sort of monument, in the scattered chaotic non-pattern of forges, half-empty chests, and the workbench where I had based my efforts. Directly facing the tower, there is a stair up to the single door, lined with torches-- to the right, a single window, two cubits high. (Behind is the Torchlit Forest, which will be expanded upon later.) Upon entering the door, one finds oneself in the crude, unwelcoming foyer, little more than a room to encase the stairway to the Tower Proper-- a trench next to it belies the Secret Entrance, and windows reveal a view of the Bay.
The staircase is straight, and leads onto a small balcony that overlooks the Bay. It faces due East, towards the foundation of the Floating Castle-to-be, and a small island that glows a pale green in the dark. Back to the castle, an open doorway leads back into the building-- the room is medium sized, and to the right, there is an open stone courtyard, separated by a wall of glass. On the left, a stairway runs-- starting at the far side of the room-- up the side of the wall. The courtyard this stairway leads to is grassy, with a cobblestone walk; there are four options, here. The first is to turn and continue up the stairs, to the Tower's peak.
On the first stairwell, the window overlooks three things of note: a brief ledge of brick, a handful of cacti (torchlit) on a distant beach, and framing the background to the left, the massive stone walls of Crescent Castle, visible as a silver-lit silhouette against the night. There are windows leading the wall up, and the sights, glimpsed hurriedly through a single pane of glass, are markedly stranger as you ascend. The second stairwell is a higher version of the courtyard's view-- with the addition of a torch on the right-hand beach, off in the distance. There is also a strange sight to the right, close at hand-- it seems to be a forest in midair, with a glimpse of purple just visible on the other side. Crescent Castle's immense towers frame the background, and there is a glimpse of a desert-- seeming quite close-- on the right, again. The windows of the next wall are mainly of the leaves of a very tall tree-- and on the stairwell, there is a forest visible at the foot of the tower, sparkling with light. Farther off, to the right, the remnant trunks of a forest fire burn endlessly; the spot has been nicknamed Phoenix Hill.
The hike emerges with two posts of mossy stone, both bearing torches on three faces, framing the way. The walkway, just visible beyond and between them, appears to be glass and moss; there is a stone expanse, and a sign, farther on, and a glass structure rising from that. Just above eye level, the clouds float, gently wafting over your head. The horizon-- and the ground itself-- from this point is a dark blue haze, contrasted in a blur against the lighter blue of the sky. Two points of light are visible in the corners of your vision-- more endless fire. Moving onward, the sign above the tall entranceway reads Clesthyra's Eye / II / In Memory of / Saunt Orolo." The dome within, walled on four sides with stone, has plenty of glass in the bottom for vision as well-- and the dome above is glass as well. The points on all four sides are indeed ever-burning, and the clouds from this distance seem massive-- colossal shadows, entirely of mist, ready to engulf your head, were it not for the shield between you.
Back to the courtyard, then-- continuing on the left, the cobblestone walkway goes around the corner of the building, without the grass. At the other end, on the left, is a brick wall, with a steel door set therein-- connected by a sparking trail of red dust to a glowing red torch, which casts the stone behind it into shades of flickering shadows. On the right, various shapes of glass seem chaotic at first, and what seems to be a tree trunk rises from the center of the scene, on a solitary plot of dirt. Through the steel door there is a fairly average brick room, with windows of average size on all sides, a large chest, a forge, a workbench and a single bookshelf. The view is similar to the above-- to the West, the Torchlit Forest is in the foreground, Phoenix Hill visible behind it, and in the distance, a faint gray silhouette of a lighthouse-like shape, against the pale sky. To the North, mainly nondescript terrain-- a bay, a hill, and in the foreground, the bottom of a darkly shadowed stone island.
Further investigating the end of the cobblestone walkway, the tree trunk turns out to belong to a massive tree, which appears to extend much of the length of the tower. The glass shapes next to it are, however, a sort of bridge, heading upwards. At the top, there are two short cobblestone posts, each with a torch on top, at eye-level. The wall behind appears to be obsidian, and the room of a cobblestone floor. Inside are three chests and two forges-- the walls are all obsidian and glass, the floor is cobblestone, and the shape is more or less circular. The view is much the same, save that the great lighthouse in the distance has disappeared. From the angle facing towards the Tower, South, one can clearly see a massive cobblestone stairway rising from the Courtyard...
Facing the stairs, two torches are just above eye level, and a forest appears to be at the top. On the left is the edge of the Bay; on the right, a cactus juts out of an expanse of dark bedrock towards the top of your vision, and on the bottom, Crescent Castle. At the top of the stairs, there is indeed a small grove, growing on a short expanse of grass. Behind the trees rise two panes of a purple vortex, suspended between pillars of obsidian-- beyond the translucent veil is a hill, and the distance of the South face, mostly Crescent Castle. What could almost be purple snowflakes swirl in and out of the vortex, creating a strange light around the whole area-- or maybe it's the torches all around. On the right, the dirt quickly gives way to sand and some bedrock, where a small desert appears to be floating in mid-air, complete with cacti. On the far end, there is a chest awaiting the weary traveler-- but also, there is a hole in the sand. Down into the darkness, the bedrock has sprouted both kinds of mushrooms in the gloom. The cave mostly turns out to the left, and at the far end, there is a wall of bookshelves-- opposite these, around the corner, a window. On the bottom right, the Torchlit Forest sparkles-- beyond it and up, Phoenix Hill. On the bottom left, the lit cacti on the beach are still shining, and Crescent Castle is barely visible behind them from this angle. Prominently, the window faces the afore-mentioned lighthouse, which sparkles with torches on top, and glows towards the bottom-- it is clearly visible, at night, and identifiable as Piromancer's Tower.
Next time, I'll post pictures. ...Yes, I am procrastinating. >_>
*The -very- first settlement was a Den, but I abandoned it fairly quickly in favor of the Tower.
